The Origins and History of the Margarita | Sol Squeeze

Many longstanding cultural phenomena boast multiple origin stories. The margarita, a classic cocktail, certainly fits this bill. Its varied narratives not only reflect the passage of time but also the cultural and geographical diversity of its influence.

The most widely accepted margarita origin story traces its creation to 1938. According to legend, Mexican bartender Carlos “Danny” Herrera created the drink for Marjorie King, a customer who was allergic to many spirits, but not tequila. Herrera mixed tequila, lime juice, and triple sec, then served it over ice in a salt-rimmed glass, creating what we now know as the margarita. The cocktail was named after the Spanish word for "daisy," which was a popular style of cocktail in the 1930s.

Another tale suggests that the margarita was created by Dallas socialite Margarita Sames in the late 1940s. Sames supposedly mixed tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice for guests at a party in Acapulco, Mexico, and the cocktail became an instant hit!

Regardless of its exact origins, the margarita gained popularity in the United States during the mid-20th century, becoming synonymous with Mexican cuisine and culture. Its simplicity and refreshing taste contributed to its widespread appeal, and it quickly became a staple in bars and restaurants across the country.

Over the years, the margarita has undergone numerous variations and adaptations, with mixologists experimenting with various ingredients and flavors. Today, it remains one of the most popular cocktails worldwide.

In addition to its popularity in bars and restaurants, the margarita has also become associated with various cultural events and celebrations, particularly Cinco de Mayo, Mexico's Independence Day, and National Margarita Day, which is celebrated annually on February 22nd.

Sol Squeeze honors the storied history of the margarita by using clean ingredients and plenty of fresh lime juice. No matter which origin story you choose to believe, you deserve a mixer that easily pairs with your favorite tequila for that perfect margarita moment!
